Chief Justice takes on errant lawyers

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Sept. 20: Mr V S Sirpurkar, Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, today criticised both lawyers and workers for allegedly observing a holiday whenever political parties called a strike. He was here to attend the inauguration of a new building at the Malda Court. Expressing displeasure with the common tendency to shorten the number of working days, the Chief Justice also took up the matter of court workers’ plea for a month long Puja vacation and summer vacation and their threat to boycott work if their demands were not met. “How can you afford to boycott a court where thousands of criminal cases are pending? We must not lose our accountability to the common people while pressing for our demands,” he added. Mr Sirpukar said that during his recent visit to Kolkata, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court proposed for a second shift of the courts from 5 pm to 9 pm to expedite processing of the large number of cases pending at different courts. “It is good to know that the Bar Association accepted this proposal and wanted to begin this second shift at Howrah Court,” Mr Sirpurkar said.
