State’s aid to Aila-hit in Malda

MALDA, 2 SEPT: The district agriculture department has received a fund of Rs 2 crore from the state government for the purpose of providing assistance to the farmers who suffered huge losses due to the cyclonic storm Aila on 25 and 26 May this year.

The deputy director agriculture (administration) had reported to the district magistrate and its higher authorities that boro paddy crop was the main crop at the stage of harvesting which was destroyed by Aila. The estimated loss of boro paddy was Rs. 37.91 crore in Malda district.

The state has asked the district principal agriculture officer (PAO) to distribute assistance, among the farmers who had suffered losses due to Aila, in the form of a composition kit for boro cultivation. The government has also directed that farmers will be getting boro paddy kit that will contain boro seeds, fertilizers and micro nutrient for cultivating only one bigha land. The agriculture department has planned to procure boro seeds from the state seed corporation and other materials from authorised agencies before the boro cultivation season.

“We would send the kits to the Aila-affected blocks where boro paddy was damaged. The block authorities will make a beneficiary list for its distribution in consultation with panchayat samiti and gram panchayat members”, said Mr Soumendra Nath Das, agriculture development (technical) officer.

“Small and marginal farmers who suffered huge losses before harvesting the boro paddy due to Aila will get assistance for boro cultivation for the next season,” Mr. Das said. SNS
