Team to rescue 'kidnapped' girl

Statesman News Service

MALDA, (India) Dec. 9. — Malda police on Friday decided to send a team to Uttar Pradesh to rescue a 13-year-old girl who was married off in Uttar Pradesh a few days ago, officials said. Authorities said that though the father of the girl, Mr Bipul Sarkar, lodged a complaint yesterday with the Malda police station, it was revealed that the parents had given permission to send the girl to UP with their neighbour, who they have accused as kidnapper of the girl now.
“We have registered the case as kidnapping because she is a minor. We have nothing to do if it is found that she (Nirupama) had given consent to marry some one there,” said Mr Dilip Kumar Mondal, Malda Superintendent of Police. According to him, Maneka Sarkar, who is living in UP after her marriage, came to her father’s house in Malda. Her mother, Geeta Sarkar and she gave them a marriage proposal for Nirupama in UP and they left Malda with Nirupama a few days ago. “Without the consent of her parents they could not have taken the girl, but father of the girl, Bipul Sarkar decided to lodge a complaint with the police to be on the safe side,” said the Malda SP. An official source said: “There is a traditional system of marriage and many girls are being married off in UP. It is true that some of them are being sold off in the brothels but, on the other hand, some of them are leading happily married lives.” Investigation also revealed that many people increase their permanent labour force by marrying more than one or two girls, one to look after household jobs and the other to work in their crop fields, a senior police official said. The Malda SP said that police would try to rescue the girl and produce her in the Malda court for settlement of the case. #
