Malda gets Rs. 5.63 cr for infrastructure

MALDA, Nov. 8: The North Bengal Development Council has allotted Rs 5.63 crore for infrastructure development in Malda district out of Rs 42 crore it received for the six districts of north Bengal, the Malda zilla parishad sabhadhipati, Mr Goutam Chakraborty, said today. A majority of the fund would be utilised in the minority belts of the district, sources said. Mr Chakraborty said the chief minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, has approved 14 schemes submitted to the council for the Malda district. Yesterday, the chief minister held a meeting with senior officials, including the sabhadhipatis of the six districts of north Bengal, in Kolkata. The CM stressed on the need to develop infrastructure in the north Bengal districts for industrialisation in the region, Mr Chakraborty said . He added that the CM had assured that the government would develop two tea gardens for tea tourism in the region. “The CM also reviewed the funds allotted earlier for the development of six districts.” The Malda district administration, it was learnt, failed to furnish utilisation certificates of a few projects. The district had got Rs 2.87 crore for the infrastructure development earlier. Sources said the administration could not spend Rs 1.35 crore for the construction of central bus terminus, Rs 1.30 crore for the Laxmipur drainage scheme, and Rs 56 lakh for Chanchal drainage scheme. Some projects under the assistance of the NBDC, however, are under process, officials said.Mr Chakraborty said that tender for the central bus terminus had been floated. The Laxmipur drainage project would be reviewed soon, he said.
