MALDA, May 29: Fourteen Opposition members of English Bazaar Municipality, under the leadership of the Congress MLA, Mr Krishenendu Narayan Choudhury, are pressing hard to call a meeting for electing their chairman. After tomorrow, any three councillors can call a meeting for the election of the chairman following the removal of Mr Nihar Ranjan Ghosh. Eleven ruling members of the board had decided not to call any such meeting when the executive officer of the municipality took the initiative to elect the chairman, based on a High Court order. As a result, the vice-chairman of the board did not call a meeting. The ruling councillors said: “They can elect their chairman by calling a meeting. We will not do so.” The Opposition members are divided over the selection of the chairman.At a time when Mr Choudhury, is trying to project Mrs Sandhya Das as chairman, other members are opposing him indirectly.The Congress councillor, Mr Biswanath Guho, has also been eyeing the chair. Mr Choudhury said discussions were on and one of the Opposition councillors would be nominated as chairman for the election.
