Students pressured for donation

MALDA, May14: A large number of students from a private, primary teachers’ training institute at Samsi in Malda alleged that the college authorities have demanded that they donate the security money deposited at the time of admission, to the institute. The students said the college authorities threatened to deduct marks from their internal examinations if they fail to comply with their orders. It was learnt that the chairman of the District Primary School Council has given assurances that the matter would be looked into. Students said they had deposited Rs 15,000 as fees and another Rs 5,000 as security deposit.But recently, the college authorities issued a notice demanding students donate their security deposit to the institute for its development. Some students complied with the demand to avoid deduction of marks from their internal examinations. But many students from the 2005-06 batch are protesting against the decision. The institute authorities have denied the charge.They said that they had only wanted to adjust hostel rent from the security deposit of the students.
