Dial 100... but it may avail naught

MALDA, 10 FEB: Malda police department’s number -100- for receiving information and taking prompt action is not functioning since many days.

The non-functioning of 100-dial came to light today when the additional district magistrate (development ) Mr Indrajit Paul was trying to report an incident since this morning.

Mr Paul initially got information from locals that a man fell into a drain, close to Bandh Road near irrigation office, this morning and died but no body had come to rescue the victim.

He also got further information that no one was coming forward to rescue him and people suspected that he was murdered.

“I decided to report the matter to police through 100-dial. I tried hard to contact 100-dial from my residence, close to the place of occurrence, but no one was responding. I came to my office and tried again to contact police through the 100-dial but no one replied”, said Mr Indrajit Paul.

Mr Paul later came to know that police found the body and registered it as unnatural death.

The body was identified as Uttam Das, a group D employee of irrigation department.

Police sent the body for post-mortem for further investigation.

According to locals he was an alcoholic.

When asked about 100-dial, the additional SP Mr Kalyan Mukherjee said: “ Not only 100-dial but the telephone of English Bazaar police station too is not functioning well over the past few days”.
