Eco-tourism project for Adina forest

Statesman News Service
MALDA, March. 3. — The Malda Zilla Parishad and the Malda forest department have jointly prepared an eco-tourism project, estimating around Rs 98 lakh on the Adina forest located in Gazole, officials said today. The Malda divisional forest officer, Ms Sumita Ghatak, has submitted the project to the Malda Zilla Parishad sabhadhipati, Mr Goutam Chakraborty and requested him to release funds allotted for for this project. Ms Ghatak said: “Construction of the entrance gate will start in April this year. The design for the gate will be inspired from the historical ruins of Malda.” Officials said, a proposal for land acquisition within the forests has also been put forward. The land will be used to set up a deer park and a migratory birds’ hub which will also include a pond within the forest park. Rs 35 lakh has been estimated for the acquisition of lands. It may be recalled that due to lack of area, deer in the forest have been facing acute food crisis. The problem intensified especially after the number of deer in the forest increased causing shifting of deer to other areas in North Bengal. At present, the forest covers about 70 hectares of land. If the department manages to acquire the private lands close to the forest, the total area under forest would increase to about 100 hectares. It is also planned that along with the facilities of toilets and sitting arrangements under the open sky for the tourists, there will be two cottages and one dormitory for both the middle and the upper class families. The plan also includes facilities for a restaurant. #
