Opium plants destroyed

MALDA.(India)March 10.- District excise officials today destroyed close to .7 million opium plants at Khanda village under Harishchandrapur police station , police said. Authorities said since the last three months a group of locals were cultivating opium here covering 1.07 acres land whose estimated black market value is nearly Rs 4 crore. Nobody has been arrested so far. It is the first case in this district, officials said. “We have to ascertain the name of land owners from the land and land reforms department,” said Mr Sujit Das, superintendent of Malda excise department. “Investigation is on to initiate a case against the cultivators on the charge of illegal cultivation of opium,” Mr Das said. — SNS
