Tight security at Mahadipur after clash

MALDA, Oct. 16: The Malda SP, Mr DK Mondal, today said that armed police forces would continue to function at Mahadipur near Indo-Bangladesh border to defuse communal tension in the area. Though no fresh clash was reported in the last two days, people of Mahadipur are still in a state of panic. The Malda district administration had called a peace meeting on Saturday at the Maharajpur Junior High School ground, but the initiative flopped as only one group turned up at the meeting. It may be recalled that communal tension flared up at Mahadipur after two groups of people clashed over the matter of cattle grazing last Friday. Authorities said trouble broke out after one of the two groups demanded compensation for mango saplings damaged by a herd of cattle belonging to the other community. n SNS
