Embankments: Locals may launch movement

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 17 JUNE: The “Bhaluka Bandh Banchao Committee”, an apolitical organisation of locals, is contemplating staging another agitation to press the administration to repair the embankments at Fulohar in the northern part of Malda district before the onset of monsoon.

The committee members would hold a meeting tomorrow to chalk out the details of the agitation. They have already drawn the attention of the district administration to the necessity of taking up anti-erosion work to protect the embankments at Bhaluka Bazaar.

The North Malda MP, Miss Mausam Noor, recently visited the spot and spoke to the committee members. She reportedly assured them that she would do everything to convince the Centre and the state government to take preventive flood measures.

“Malda being a flood prone district, large swathes of land have been eroded at the bank of Fulohar at Bazitpur in Ratua-I and Bhaluka Bazaar in Harishchandrapur, adding to the flood threat,” she said, pointing out that the dyke may be breached if a spell of torrential rain occurs in the area.

According to Mr Ajit Saha, a Bandh Banchao Committee member, the administration seemed indifferent to the developing danger. “Neither the Farakka Barrage Project nor the state's irrigation department have taken up any plan on the matter. The dyke under Harishchandrapur-II block seems precarious in at least two places,” he complained.
