Medical waste racket: New evidence found

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 18 JUNE: Following the arrest of two members of medical waste recycling rackets, police investigation further revealed that the racketeers had collected medical waste from Malda district hospital. Investigating officers recently examined the register of the district hospital and found that the batch numbers of the medical waste matched those in the hospital records.Police arrested the two racketeers after discovering three temporary godowns close to the district hospital on 11 June where a huge amount of used syringes and plastic saline bottles were collected and stored. The duo got bail from the court, and police are continuing the investigation, using information gained through their interrogation. The chief medical officer of health in Malda, Dr Srikanta Roy, said: “The police did not inform me about their views after the investigation. No-one had informed me that police had checked the register of the district hospital and found a match with the batch numbers of the medical waste.” Though the CMOH had issued an inquiry order and asked the hospital superintendent to furnish the inquiry report relating to the possible negligence of staff, no report has been tabled before the CMOH. To stop the recycling of medical waste, the CMOH has issued a fresh order to nursing staff to dispose of syringes using a cutter after their use.
