Trinamul nominates district president

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 18 JUNE: Finally, the Trinamul chief Ms Mamata Banerjee has nominated a new district president for Malda district. Mr Goutam Chakraborty, former Congress leader, MLA and Malda zilla parishad sabhadhipati, will take the position.

The outgoing district president, Mr Dulal Sarkar, will hold a meeting with block presidents on Sunday, and officially hand over the post. At a meeting with district leaders in Kolkata, Miss Banerjee disclosed her desire to change the leadership in Malda and yesterday the matter had been finalised.

Mr Sarkar, the outgoing district president, arrived in Malda today. Mr Charkraborty, who is also vice-president of the state Trianamul Congress, is planning to come to Malda tomorrow. It may be noted that, a few days back, youth Trinamul Congress leaders were divided over the issue of presidential selection, .leading to a clash breaking out between two groups at Malda Town Hall during a conference.Mr Dulal Sarkar said: “The clash was not related to the selection of district president. Mr Nirmal Karmakar, another leader, was assaulted by another group following a financial transaction. Mr Karmakar borrowed money but he did not repay it on time.” “I introduced Mr Chakraborty (Goutam-da) as district president. Mamata-di has inducted me in the state secretariat body,” said Mr Sarkar.

Mr Goutam Charkraborty did not comment, saying: “I will hold a Press conference in Malda soon and will talk to the Media then.”

On the other hand, Mr Dulal Sarkar, said: “In Malda, North Dinajpur and Murshidabad, so-called Congress belts, we run our party organisations following the understanding made between the two parties before the Parliament elections. In south Bengal, the Trinamul organisation is gradually developing beyond that of the Congress day by day. But it is very difficult to develop party organisations in Malda and adjoining districts.” “It's difficult to strengthen the Trinamul Congress because CPI-M workers, who have been using their party for their own selfish reasons, are now coming over to the Trinamul side, again only to fulfil their vested interests. We are hesitating to accept them at present,” Mr Sarkar said.
