A bitter experience on Teachers' Day

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Sept 5: Over 900 teachers of 61 state-owned schools in Malda district are upset with the education officials' decision to put the disbursement of salary on hold till the submission of audit reports by the authorities of these schools. It was a bitter Teachers' Day experience for these teachers today. It may be recalled that the Malda District Inspector of Schools (secondary education) had recently decided to put on hold the salary disbursement process in 61 schools till these schools submit their audit reports. If the officials are to be believed, these schools have not been submitting their audit reports since long. The treasury department, meanwhile, has found that of the 333 schools in the district, only 121 schools have submitted their audit reports till this year. Worse, at least 101 schools have failed to submit any of their previous audit reports. A total of 61 schools, including 33 madrassas were found "most guilty" by the education officials. "Some of the schools have not conducted audit for more than 20 years," said a treasury official. Mr Chinmoy Sarkar, Malda DI of schools, has instructed the erring schools to submit their audit reports by 31 October this year.
