One held for bullet theft

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Sept. 23: Police last night arrested one Abdul Barek in connection with recent bullet theft from a police camp set up at Laxmighaat village in the English Bazaar police station area. Over 50 bullets were found missing on 7 July this year. The Malda SP, Mr DK Mondal, had started an inquiry into the theft on 9 July. Three constables were suspended in this connection and the camp was winded up following the incident. Though the police had earlier arrested two persons in this connection, they failed to trace the bullets. The arrested persons got bail from the court latter. Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted Abdul Barek yesterday evening. "Barek has so far not disclosed anything about the theft. We suspect he is the main culprit," the SP, Mr Mondal, said. He added that the missing bullets are yet to be traced. Police today urged the court to remand Barek in police custody for seven days. The accused was admitted to Malda district hospital after he complained of illness this afternoon. Barek, it was learnt, had links with police officials posted at the camp at Laxmighaat village. The camp was set up there after a mango trader was hacked to death recently.
