Studnets , cops clash in Malda

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Sept. 16: The campus of Institute of Management for Private Professional Studies, a private engineering college in Malda, turned into a battlefield last night following students' agitation over placement demand. More than six students were injured in a clash with police. The agitating students accused the police of resorting to lathicharge. Trouble broke out when a police team from English Bazaar tried to rescue the chairman of the institute and other teachers who were allegedly confined by the students in a room. The I-C of English Bazaar police station, however, said the students' allegation that the police resorted to lathicharge was false. He instead accused the students of attacking the police. Though the students decided to boycott classes following last night's incident, they became furious today after the college authorities allegedly instructed them to vacate residential hostels. The students have continued their agitation criticising the college authorities for their apparent failure in providing placement to them. It may be recalled that a few years ago, students had protested against the college management on the same issue. "We are not in a position to manage placement at as the results of the college is not up to mark. The reputed organisations are not interested in recruiting our students owing to bad results," said a teacher of the college on condition of anonymity.
