MALDA, Nov. 17: The irrigating department in Malda will send a proposal to the newly appointed district magistrate, Mr Sridhar K Ghosh, to call an all-party meeting to adopt a resolution for the construction of a ninth retired embankment on the bank of the Ganga in Kaliachak II.
During monsoons, the irrigation minister came to Malda and instructed the district administration to call an all-party meeting immediately for the construction of ninth retired embankment for flood protection. It was to give priority to build a retired embankment in the winters when there is no alternative flood protection measure on the left bank of the river for next year. The present district magistrate, Mr Shidhar K Ghosh, was briefed about the problem of villagers’ resistance before building the ninth retired embankment at an introductory meeting a few days ago. The executive engineer of the irrigation department Mr S Misra today decided to send reminder about the all-party meeting to the present district magistrate. n SNS
