News born's death in hospital sparks off row

MALDA, Nov. 19: After the death of a new born baby, an agitated mob ransacked the state run Gazol rural hospital this afternoon and blocked the state highway around 4 p.m.The block administration and police failed to control the mob and a section of irate people who later ransacked staff quarters including that of doctors and nurses and damaged the private car of a doctor this evening.

Fearing attacks nursing staffs, doctors and others managed to escape. At 8.30 pm police were successful in bringing things under control. CPI(ML) backed All India Student’s Association(AISA), demonstrated in the hospital premises. Police resorted to lathi charge and in the fracas that followed, six policemen were injured. Six AISA supporters were arrested on charges of inciting violence.

Last evening, Belly Biswas, resident of Panchpara village, was admitted with labour pain to Gazol rural hospital. She was shifted to the labour room about 8 a.m today but allegedly remained unattended for few hours. About 2.30 pm she gave birth to a baby who died after delivery. Though the hospital doctors claimed that the baby was premature and some organs were not fully grown, the relatives blamed the doctors for negligence. The chief medical office of health (CMOH) Dr. Srikanta Roy said that a team from the district would visit the Gazol rural health centre for inquiry.

“Doctors and nurses are always on duty. It is very difficult to comment on the matter without a proper inquiry”, Dr. Roy said. “Steps will be taken after going through the inquiry report”, he added. n SNS
