Biswanath Guho playes triple role

Statesman News Service
MALDA, April 24: Congressman and Intuc district president, Mr Biswanath Guho, is playing a triple role in the four Assembly segments of Malda. There is no one to question him after the demise of the late Congress stalwart, ABA Ghani Khan Choudhury. Though Mr Guho claims to be a follower of Khan Choudhury, he is contesting from the Manikchak Assembly segment as an Independent candidate.Mr Ram Prabesh Mandal is contesting as the Congress candidate. Khan Choudhury had proposed Mr Mandal’s name for the Manikchak Assembly segment. The Malda Congress had to nominate him after cancelling the name of the proposed candidate, Mr Jalil Shaikh.Mr Guho, as the district president of Intuc, was also one of the contenders for this seat and had approached Khan Choudhury. It is reported that Mr Guho is also campaigning in favour of another Independent candidate, Mr Ananta Chakraborty, as the member of Indira Rajiv Mancha in English Bazaar. At the same time, Mr Guho is also planning to campaign for Mrs Rubi Noor and Mr AH Khan Choudhury, in the Sujapur and Kaliachak Assembly constituencies. Mr Guho today met the Congress district president, Mrs Rubi Noor, and assured her that he would campaign for her and Mr AH Khan Choudhury. The Intuc district president told reporters: “Rubidi has allowed me to contest in Manikchak.”Reportedly, Mr Guho has selected a cricket bat as his election symbol. During the campaign, he is highlighting the heavy erosion problem on the left bank of the river Ganga in this zone. Besides Mr Guho, the Congress candidate, Mr Ram Prabesh Mandal, is also campaigning in the name of Ghani Khan Choudhury in Manikchak, which is now confusing the voters of this Assembly segment. It was also learnt that Mr Prakash Kumar Singhi, a local with tremendous influence and Mr Biswajit Sen as the Trinamul candidate, are contesting against the present CPI-M MLA, Mrs Asima Chowdhury in Manikchak. Political observers believe that the voting tradition of this constituency followed since 1977 may not change even this time after the division of anti- Left votes in this segment. The election candidates of the CPI-M and the Congress have been elected alternatively but everything now depends on the final counting. In 2001, Mrs Asima Chowdhury secured 48,239 votes, defeating Mr Ram Prabesh Mandal by a margin of 8,384 votes.Mr Sitangshu Kundu got 6,935 votes and Mr Soharab Ali bagged 3,633 votes. #
