CPM MLA heckled

Statesman News Service
MALDA, April 26: Mr Subhendu Chowdhury, the CPI-M candidate for Malda Assembly constituency and a sitting MLA, was heckled at Dakatpukur by a group of miscreants yesterday while he was on his way to Yatradanga for poll campaign, police officials said today. Authorities concerned informed that it is yet to be ascertained whether Congress or Trinamul Congress supporters were behind the attack. Reportedly, no one has been arrested so far as no name was mentioned in the FIR lodged with the police. The CPI-M district secretary, Mr Jiban Moitra, narrated that Mr Subhendu Chowdhury’s vehicle was intercepted by a group of people, who attacked him when he got down from the vehicle to inquire what the matter was. Mr Moitra stated that it is quite possible that the attackers were Congress supporters, who also assaulted some CPI-M workers and damaged two vehicles after Mr Choudhury hurriedly departed. CPI-M party sources said that some people propagating a vote boycott had rounded up the candidate demonstrating black flags but the reason behind it was still unknown, as the party did take up measures to solve problems regarding basic amenities during the last five years. The incident, however, has failed to evoke surprise among CPI-M workers in other parts of Malda. They stated that the attack was a fallout of not remaining in touch with the general public in the last five years. CPI-M members in the English Bazaar municipal area that comes under the Malda Assembly segment said that they too are facing problems as the MLA never visited the area in the last five years. However, those CPI-M workers who have remained in touch with the locals are now organising public meetings in favour of Mr Chowdhury to rectify matters. The CPI-M workers are facing problems in asking people to vote for Mr Chowdhury,” a local CPI-M leader said.
