NABARD sanctions loan for anti-erosion work

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 1 APRIL: Finally the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned loan of Rs 8.83 crore for ‘permanent’ anti- erosion work on the bank of Fulohar at Bhaluka in Harishchandrapur.
On 26 March, the top officials of NABARD in Mumbai sanctioned the loan from its RIDF- XV (Rural Infrastructure Development Fund), said Mr S Misra, the executive engineer of the irrigation division in Malda.
In September 2009 the Malda district administration had asked the irrigation department to prepare a project for anti-erosion work based on RIDF-XV, which is controlled by the NABARD.
After the approval of the chief engineers’ committee of the state irrigation and waterways department, the district magistrate, Mr Sridhar Ghosh, had requested the Jalpaiguri divisional commissioner to pursue the state for approval of the project so that the district can obtain loan from NABARD for implementing anti-erosion work at Bhaluka.
Anti-erosion work in permanent nature is imperative at Bhaluka to save the existing embankment for flood protection in coming monsoon.
Last year, a large part of agricultural land and embankment were eroded away at Bhaluka. Flood waters from the Fulohar had inundated large parts of Harishchandarpur and Ratua block areas during monsoon.
“After receiving confirmation of the funds we have started preparation to begin the work. We have already received technical sanctioning for inviting tender. Hopefully we will able to give work order on 9 April”, said Mr S Misra.
“ We will be getting two months – enough time to finish the work before 15 June the dateline of beginning monsoon”, Mr Misra said. SNS
