Statesman News Service
MALDA, 1 APRIL: The English Bazaar police arrested a railway employee, Mr Pradip Sarkar under section 376 of the IPC on charges of raping a 14-year-old-girl, who worked as domestic help in his house.
Mr Kalyan Mukherjee, ASP, said that the police arrested the man on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother. “We are organizing medical tests to get the facts”, he said.
According to Mrs Shyamali Chouhan, the victim’s mother , a resident of Krishnapally  ( Bapuji colony) in English Bazaar town , her daughter became pregnant three months ago.
“My daughter disclosed the facts when we confronted her” said Mrs Chouhan.
When Mrs Chouhan came to know of the incident, she intimated her neighbours, who called a reconciliatory meeting yesterday. There, Mr Sarkar reportedly confessed his crime and agreed to compensate the girl and her family. The reconciliation failed after the mediators demanded more money from Sarkar than when he was offering. Sarkar declined to accept the proposal following which the Mrs Chouhan lodged a complaint at the police station. “The matter is subject to investigation. We need to know if the girl was working as a domestic help in Mr Sarkar’s house to frame charges under Child labour ) prohibition and regulation) Act against him”, said the ASP. SNS
