20 cows take the plunge

Statesman News Service
MALDA, July 26: Scared by lightning, 20 cows jumped into a water channel and drowned at Noorpur Ghat in Manikchak block of Malda district yesterday. Hapless villagers saw the incident unfold before their eyes but could do nothing to save the cows fearing nature’s fury. According to an eyewitness account, the cows were returning home in the evening when lightning struck. Confused by the sound and the flash, the herd of cows jumped into a nearby water body and were swept away. The cows could not swim ashore as the water in the channel was deep. Moreover, the channel was covered by hyacinth, which posed an obstacle the cows could not overcome. “They were simply swept away by the swift current of water,” said M Soumitra Roy, in-charge of animal resources development of Malda zilla parishad. The locals tried to recover the cows later but only came up with only three carcasses. The rest had been swept away.
