Malda administration sounds flood alert

Statesman News Service
MALDA, July 21: The Malda district administration today sounded the red alert in the protected areas as the water level in the Fulohar rose to 28.5 metres ~ six inches above the danger mark. The executive engineer Malda irrigation division Mr S Misra said that the water level is feared to rise up to 28.80 metre by tomorrow. There is no report of fresh inundation breaching any embankments in the protected areas of the northern part of Malda district, Mr. Misra added. According to him, the water level of the Ganges has fallen back to 24 metres. “Hopefully water level will be receding from Monday if rain does not continue in the catchments,” Mr Misra, said. Meanwhile, erosion continues unabated along the Bangladesh border including the Battali area where a 12 metre stretch of fencing was destroyed.
