Mishap death sparks roadblock

MALDA, July 24: Protesting against the death of a student in a road mishap, angry students of Malda College blocked a busy road in English Bazaar town for more than an hour today. The agitating students were backed by the Students' Federation of India activists.It was learnt that Nabendu Karmakar, a student of Malda College, was run over by a private bus on Rabindra Avenue road in English Bazaar town today. The accident occurred when Nabendu was on way to his house riding a bicycle. According to eyewitnesses, Nabendu, who got admission in postgraduate self-financing education system of Malda College, was returning home today to give the good news to his family members. He, however, died in the mishap.Peeved at the incident, angry students led by the SFI blocked the Rabindra Avenue road, demanding measures to avoid frequent accidents. Several vehicles remained stranded on the road following the agitation.The Malda SDO and additional superintendent of police rushed to the spot and assured the students of introducing measures to stop frequent mishaps on Rabindra Avenue road.The students lifted their agitation after getting the assurance.Meanwhile, the driver of the killer bus has surrendered to the police. The Malda district administration would hold a meeting with private bus owners here tomorrow to fix speed limits for vehicles plying on the Rabindra Avenue road, the Malda SP, MR DK Mondal, said.
