Protest spurs teachers' rethink

Statesman News Service
MALDA, July 23: Following protests from teachers, the Board of Secondary Education, West Bengal, is planning to reconsider its decision of conducting eight unit tests instead of four in a year in high schools, Mr Tapan Chakrabory, a board member and Malda district secretary of All Bengal Teachers' Association (ABTA), said here today. It may be recalled that the board had recently issued a circular, making it mandatory for the high schools to take eight unit tests from the students of class V to class X instead of the half yearly examination. The teachers' organisations, however, expressed their reservation against the proposal and urged the board officials to reconsider it. Mr Chakraborty said that a final decision would be taken at the next meeting of the board. "Since the school authorities are not conducting unit tests in a proper manner, the board !is planning to review the system," Mr Chakraborty said.
