Cops, civic body lock horns

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Oct. 8: Now, the police, it seems, are infected by the land-grab wind blowing through the state. The English Bazaar Municipality has accused the police of grabbing its land for the construction of the boundary wall of Rathbari police outpost. Alleging that the police have grabbed the land they had earmarked for the rehabilitation of evicted traders, the English Bazaar civic body chief, Mr Narendranath Tiwari, visited the spot today along with senior civic officials and forced the police to stop construction work. "We wrote a letter to the police on 6 October requesting them to stop construction work, but to no avail. It is surprising that the law keepers have now turned lawbreakers in the town," a visibly annoyed Mr Tiwari, said. The Malda superintendent of police, Mr Dilip Kumar Mondal, however, claimed that they stopped the construction work yesterday after receiving the letter. "We have planned to measure the land with the help of block land and land reforms officer tomorrow. We started the boundary wall construction work on the basis of the alignment fixed earlier," he said.
