Recreational therapy boost for psychiatric patients

MALDA, Oct. 24: The newly reopened psychiatric unit of the Malda district hospital has successfully brought a few psychiatric patients into the mainstream, providing them with recreational therapy at various Durga puja pandals, the Malda CMOH, Dr Radha Raman Banik, said today. The 10-beded psychiatric unit had experimented the theory of the therapy during last Durga puja and observed improvement of those patients who were suffering from depression owing to social and family problems. The therapy was experimented on such patients."A senior district administration official was admitted to the Malda district hospital recently and returned home with healthy mental condition," said Dr Banik. He, however, refused the disclose the identity of the officer. According to him, the doctors and other staff of the hospital visited puja pandals and offered recreational therapy to the patients. "The patients responded positively," doctors said. Doctors discharged the patients within a short period and advised them to go home. The CMOH said that Dr PP Dasgupta and Dr KK Ghosh are handling the patients alternatively with the help of six sisters and four other staff of the Malda district hospital's psychiatric unit.
