Two murder accused remanded

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Sept. 30: The Malda court today remanded the two youths arrested yesterday in connection with Maya Sarkar and her daughter Anusha's murder in police custody for three days. The English Bazaar police yesterday arrested Subhankar Sarkar (22) and his friend Debapriya Pal (19) in connection with the murder and produced them in Malda chief judicial magistrate's court today from where they were remanded in police custody. While Subhankar, a dropout, was the boyfriend of Anusha, Debapriya is a second year student of Malda College. It may be recalled that 52-year-old Maya, a teacher of Krishna Mohan Girls' High School and her daughter Anusha were found murdered at their Air View Complex residence here recently. A large number of people gathered outside the court premises today where the accused duo were produced. The locals criticised a section of lawyers for defending the accused in the court for "want of money". The lawyers, however, said what they did today was part of their duty. "A failed love story was the reason behind the murder," said Mr Sujit Kumar Sarkar, the Malda additional superintendent of police.
