Ration row worries Malda police

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Oct. 21: The Malda district administration has decided to deploy additional forces in some areas to deal with the rising cases of ration protests by the locals. Several ration dealers were attacked in the town in the recent past over alleged faulty rationing system in the district. According to police, ration protests would increase in the town after the completion of the pujas. Terming the situation as alarming, police said that since the political parties have also taken up the issue, it needs to be dealt in a serious manner. Yesterday, the police had to rush to Bamongram near Sujapur in Kaliachak police station area where two dealers, including the widow of a former dealer, were confined in their room by the locals over alleged irregular foodgrain supply.“Though the police had been able in tackling the situation, tension still prevails in the area,” said a senior police officer. If the police investigation is anything to go by, local criminals are behind the ration dealers. “We have decided to curb the problem with iron hand. Additional police forces will be deployed in the sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incident,” the Malda superintendent of police, Mr DK Mondal, said.
