Doc assaulted after woman gives birth to stillborn

MALDA, Nov. 12: A government doctor, Dr Pannalal Sikdar was assaulted by a group of people at Malda District Hospital today. Trouble broke out when a patient, Mrs Jayanti Roy gave birth to a stillborn baby at the hospital today morning. She was admitted to the Malda District Hospital on Tuesday night and was under the supervision of Dr Anupam Bera. Mrs Roy alleged that everything was normal but the doctors did not take care of her properly. "My baby was normal but died due to negligence of doctor,” she informed her husband Mr Mukul Roy, a resident of Mangalbari in Old Malda municipal area. Her relatives turned violent on receiving the news and attacked Dr Sikdar since she was under his supervision before being admitted to the hospital. According to the doctors at the hospital Mrs Jayanti Roy's relatives slapped him. Senior members of Health Service Doctors and Indian Medical Association, Malda branch, condemned the incident and demanded punishment for the culprits. Dr Sikdar had lodged a complaint with the superintendent of the district hospital Dr Animesh Roy. Dr Roy lodged a complaint with the English Bazaar police station. The doctors have been demanding safety and security in the hospital to avoid such public outrage following similar incidents that had occurred earlier at the Malda district hospital. According to information received last the patient's relatives had not lodged a complaint with the authorities.
