Four killed struck by Jalpaiguri-bound train in Kaliachak

MALDA, 7 JAN: Four persons were reportedly killed struck by the New Jalpaiguri bound North Bengal (Haldibari) superfast train near Khalitpur railway station in Kaliachak this afternoon but the railway officials inspecting the reported accident failed to detect any body - dead or alive at the spot, which has added to the confusion.


According to the Malda SP, Mr Bhuban Mandal, the driver of the train had informed the Jamirhat station manager that the train hit four persons and all of them died on the spot. The message was also conveyed to the Khalitpur station manager. Despite the report, the railway personnel, however, could not trace the bodies.


“I got the information that four persons were killed but our staff including RPF personnel could not find any body at the given spot,” said the Khaltipur railway station manager. The Malda SP said that the railway officials including the DRM are yet to confirm the report.”


According to the police, four persons, including two woman and two children who were crossing the tracks had been trapped as the express and a goods train reached the spot at the same time. “According to the locals, the victims were Baby Momin, and her two children Pervin (7) and Suraj (5) and another unidentified body has been found, believed to be one of a local beggar,” The police officials said. The Malda police have sent a team to the Morga-uri village to search for the bodies. According to the Malda SP, the police have found pieces of human flesh along the railway tracks at the fateful spot.


In another incident today, angry people blocked the National Highway 34 at Rathbari five-point crossing in the heart of the Malda town after a lorry ran over a man. ; SNS


Villagers foil kidnapping bid, save girl


Malda, 7 Jan: Residents of a village in West Bengal’s Malda district foiled a kidnapping bid and rescued a girl from the clutches of her abductors, police said recently.


The incident happened on 3 January at Harishchandrapur village in the district when the victim was on her way home along with her friends from Premabhaktipur High Madrasa, where she was studying in seventh standard, they said.


Suddenly five persons came in a car and took away the girl. The other students rushed to headmaster Zamil Akhtar who immediately called the police and the pradhan of Rashidabad panchayat, whose office was near the main road of the village.


Immediately after getting the call, the pradhan along with some villagers, armed with sticks, blocked the road with tree trunks forcing the kidnappers to stop the car in which the 13-year-old girl was found bound and gagged in the car, police sources said.


The villagers then forced the four ~ Rustam Ali, Rakib Sheikh, Maqbul Hossain and Faridul Islam ~ all residents of Bihar, to come out of the car. While three of them were handed over to police, one managed to flee, police said. ;PTI

MALDA, 7 JAN: A 12-year old Harun Sheikh was injured when his friend, Jahiruddin Sheikh (12) shot him from an improvised gun while playing at Chandpara village near Jalalpur under Kaliachak police station today. Informing, the Malda SP, Mr Bhuban Mandal said that the police would interrogate Jahiruddin's father, Rafajul Sheikh about the gun. Harun was admitted at the Malda district hospital and referred to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. ;SNS

MALDA, 7 JAN: The BSNL lunched 3G mobile services in Malda today. The company has targeted to provide 1.5 lakh new connections and 3500 3G connections in the current financial year, informed the BSNL chief general manager, Mr S Roy. ;SNS


Communal tension


MALDA, 7 JAN: Communal tension broke out in a village close to Baishnabnagar police station following a kidnapping case. According to the police, three people had allegedly kidnapped one person from a minority community. Police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. ;SNS
