Prohibitory orders imposed on college to avert students’ clash

MALDA, 4 JAN: Malda administration has imposed Section 144 CrPc within 200 metres of the Chanchal College campus today to avoid any further clashes between Students' Federation of India (SFI) and Chhatra Parishad (CP) supporters during the process of filing nomination papers for the students’ union elections.

The Malda SP, Mr Bhuban Mandal said: “In order to avoid any untoward incident on the issue of college election, necessary arrangements will be made on 10 January in Chanchal College during the polls and counting procedure”.

The decision to impose Section 144 CrPC was taken after clashes broke out between the SFI and the CP supporters on 2 January, when both SFI and CP leaders were collecting nomination papers from Chanchal College.

Another clash broke out between police personnel and the CP supporters on the day when police had to initiate a lathicharge to stop clashes among local political leaders belonging to the Congress and the CPI-M.

Yesterday, the additional SP Mr Kalyan Mukherjee and Chanchal SDO Mr Subho Mukherjee held a meeting with the SFI and CP leaders to have a discussion on the issue.

At the meeting it was decided that the CP candidates would file nomination papers first and after a few hours the SFI would continue with the filing process.

Today, the additional SP was present at the Chanchal college campus while the nomination papers were being filed. The administration announced a particular time for filing nomination papers separately today. Both the students’ organisations (SFI and CP) filed nomination papers peacefully today, the Malda SP saidd.

A few days ago the SFI did not file a single nomination paper in Gour Mahavidyalaya and similarly the CP could not file a single nomination papers in Malda College. Students of Gour Mahavidyalaya and the guardians as well did not agree to file nomination papers for the union election at Gour Mahavidyalaya, SFI sources said.

On the other hand, a section of Congress leaders disclosed an organisational weakness in Malda College for not filing nomination papers for the students’ union elections. ;SNS
