Malda issues orders to set up stadium at Chanchal

MALDA, 6 JAN: The Malda Zilla Parishad (MZP) has issued orders to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) on the proposed sub-divisional sports stadium at Chanchal in North Malda, here today. The MZP's decision has encouraged the local people and political leaders.

“The dream of Mr Priya Ranjan Das Munshi, former Raiganj MP and former Union Information and Broadcasting minister, may come true”, the local residents believe.

Mr Das Munshi wanted to build the stadium, which was believed to be his dream project, but in his absence the project never kicked off. The North Malda MP, Mrs Mausam Noor and the Congress MLA from Kharba, Mr Asif Mahbub, held a meeting with the Chanchal SDO on 4 January regarding the proposed stadium.

They wanted to know the estimated cost of the project and the present fund position of the MZP. Mrs Noor has also expressed enthusiasm to collect more funds from various sources based on the DPR.

According to the Chanchal SDO more funds will be required to build the stadium at Chanchal, which is the sub-divisional headquarters. “At present the fund position of MZP is Rs 1.15 crore including the contribution of the then MP, Mr Priya Ranjan Das Munshi and others,” said Mr Subho Mukherjee, the Chanchal SDO.

The additional executive officer of the MZP, Mr Kajal Banerjee, said: “We have already asked a chartered accountant to prepare a DPR for the stadium. Hopefully, within a month, the DPR will get ready. After its completion, we will be able to start the next process to begin the construction of the proposed stadium”.

The North Malda MP, Mrs Noor has assured the local leaders at Chanchal that she would request other MPs including those from the Rajya Sabha to contribute for the construction of the stadium to honour Mr Das Munshi.

However, Mrs Noor had promised earlier during her election campaigns that she would implement this project. But no initiative was taken by her till the last year.

The Chanchal SDO, Mr Subho Mukherjee has also requested the North Malda MP to take an initiative to implement FM radio stations at Chanchal, which was also believed to be another dream project of Mr. Das Munshi's.
