Minister unhappy over leasing out police club to bank

MALDA, 3 JAN: The state environment minister, Mr Sailen Sarkar has expressed unhappiness over the role of Malda Police Club in leasing out a part of its newly constructed multistoried building to the Malda District Cooperative Bank.

Addressing the inauguration of the new office of Malda District Cooperative Bank at Police Club building on Friday, the minister, Mr Sarkar, raised the issue.

Environment minister, Mr Sarkar said: “Malda Police Club has constructed a multistoried building on government land. But the club has taken Rs 1 crore from the Cooperative Bank for leasing out a part of its building for 99 years”.

Questioning the legality of the move he asked the administration to explore its legitimacy.

The minister also drew the attention of the Malda police superintendent, Mr Bhuban Mandal asking him to look into the matter.

Mr Mandal was also present as a guest in the inauguration programme there.

The present police super did not comment on it because he has been posted here recently.

The then police super, Mr Satyajit Bandyopadhyay, took the initiative to build multistoried building for serving several purposes of the police club.

The then district magistrate, Mr CR Das had laid the foundation stone of the police club building, just a few days before his transfer, a year ago.

During the tenure of Mr Bandyopadhyay it was decided that nearly 5,000 square feet floor of the newly constructed building of the Malda Police Club would be leased out to the Malda District Cooperative Bank.

Earlier, the main branch of the cooperative bank (day and evening) was functioning in the building of Whole Sale Consumers’ Cooperative Society on rental basis.;SNS
