BJP to contest English Bazaar Municipality elections alone

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 2 MARCH: The BJP has decided to contest the forthcoming English Bazaar Municipality election in Malda district on its own steam. Moreover, the BJP also plans to contest all the seats in the taking in the EBM.
The Congress and Trinamul collectively run the English Bazaar Municipality with the support of two BJP councillors. Of the 25 seats in the EBM seats in the EBM, the Congress and Trinamul together have 12 seats, which made the BJP’s support crucial in keeping the Left Front out of the board. Neither the Congress nor the Trinamul Congress has offered alliance with the BJP in the forthcoming polls. Deciding against waiting for such proposals, the BJP has decided to go it alone this time instead.
Speaking on the matter the BJP district secretary and EBM councillor Mr Amlan Bhaduri today, said: “We would like to contest alone here. The Congress and Trinamul Congress have not made any alliance proposal to us. If they ultimately do we would rethink our strategy”.
Mr Bhaduri claimed that the BJP enjoyed a major support base in ward numbers 11, 12, 13, 14, 20 and 23 of the EBM. “The BJP would contest in these six seats for sure and also nominate candidates wherever possible”, he added.
The BJP, which had an alliance with the Trinamul in the 2000 civic polls, had bagged four seats, which was an improvement from its performance in the 1995 election. In that year, a section of Congress councillors took the BJP’s support to form the board, which lasted for some time.
In 2005 the BJP had contested alone and won in one seat. It raised its tally to two by winning a by poll in ward no 11. (END)
