Malda, Dinajpur DMs asked to take action against illegal vans

Statesman News Service MALDA, 1 MARCH: Jalpaiguri Divisional Commissioner Mr AK Singh has asked the three district magistrates of Malda, North and South Dinajpur to take legal action against the ‘illegal’ three wheeler motorised vans in this region after the conclusion of the Madhyamik examinations.

The decision was taken at a meeting held at Jalpaiguri on 26 February following the demands of the authorised Passenger Vehicles’ Forum in three districts.

The forum had called for an indefinite strike from 25 February demanding legal action against motorised vans and informed the matter to the Jalpaiguri Divisional Commissioner.

The forum called off the strike following commissioner’s request. Mr AK Singh has also called a meeting on 26 February inviting three district magistrates and representatives of the forum.

According to the Malda district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh, the divisional commissioner studied the order of the High Court regarding unauthorised three wheeler motorised vans and instructed to take action against them after Madhyamik examination.

“The commissioner has instructed that illegal vans who are carrying passengers on the highways should be confiscated”, said Mr Ghosh.

The convenor of the forum Mr Kajal Roy said that they were happy with the divisional commissioner’s decision against the illegal vans.

“We would start movement after watching the situation after Madhyamik and Higher Secondary examinations if the administration cannot curb the menace. The administration does not want to invite any law and order problem taking action against illegal vans during examinations”, Mr Roy said.

On the other hand, under the banner of Suci backed All India Utuc’s Sara Bangal jantra Chalito Motor Van Chalak Samiti is determined to continue plying on highways carrying passengers.

At present those vans are plying carrying passengers on both state and National Highways in this region.
