Villagers assaulted police team in Malda

MALDA, 14 MARCH: A police team at Jamgachhi village within Chanchal police station was allegedly assaulted by villagers backed by a group of criminals last evening. Police had gone to raid the village as they had information of gambling in the area.
The problem rose when police caught a group of four people gambling in the village. Another person Shahjahan relative of a local gram panchayat leader was watching the game. After interrogation police arrested three people from the group including Shahjahan around 8.30 pm. The Congress backed gram panchayat members in an attempt to free Shahjahan spread a rumor that policemen had assaulted the local Imam.
This provoked the villagers and they attacked the policemen, Malda SP Mr Bhuban Mandal said.
Two police officers Mr M Chatterjee and M B Das and four other personnel were assaulted by locals.
The injured police men were administered first aid at the Chanchal hospital after they returned from Jamgachhi village. Umed Ali and Martu Ali have been identified behind the attacks. The duo was involved in several case of robbery as per police records.
Police find it difficult to curb ‘illegal’ and ‘antisocial’ activities due to locals’ resistance in many places”, said Mandal.
“Locals support illegal activities in their areas, he added.
