MALDA, 8 MARCH: The Malda district administration would launch a drive against ‘illegal’ motorised three wheeler vans in the nine blocks oh the district on 10 and 11 March in keeping with the divisional commissioner, Jalpaiguri, Mr AKSingh’s instruction.
Mr Singh had held a meeting on 26 February with the magistrate of three districts- Malda, North and south Dinajpur and had instructed that the illegal vans transporting passengers on the highways should be confiscated.
The Passenger Vehicles Forum of the three districts had launched a movement against the three wheelers carrying passengers on their routes.
Apprehending law and order problem during the special drive to dissuade the three wheeler motor vans, the Malda district administration has alerted police to arrange sufficient forces on the road during the drive to avoid any untoward incident.
The block development officers and other deputy magistrates would also carry out magisterial duties during the drive to tackle any untoward incident.
“We apprehend police would face resistance from the illegal van owners and their unions during the drive. The police would summon the magistrates whenever necessary during the exercise”, said the additional district magistrate, Mr Kajal Banerjee, who is in charge of the district in the absence of the district magistrate.
According to him, police would take action of the illegal vans transport passengers on the National and State highways.
The Suci backed All India Utuc Sara Bangla Jantra Chalito Motor Van Chalak Samati disagrees with the administrative decision and has said it would continue to transport passengers on the National and State highways. The dissidents operated motorised vans transporting passengers and goods on National and State highways in and around Malda town today.
A large number of morotised vans operate in the district and many people avail of such vehicles instead of the medium sized authorised vehicles like trekker taxis and other contracts carriers.
