Fire destroys power sub-station at Gazole

MALDA, 11 MARCH: A major fire destroyed a power sub-station at Gazole in Malda in the wee hours. Power supply to Gazole and adjacent areas remain disrupted after two of the main transformers were gutted. Power department officials put the loss at about Rs 2.5 crore.

The divisional manager, state Electricity Distribution Company limited in Malda, Mr DK Mondal, said: “The oil tank of a transformer caught fire following a burst insulator and spread damaging the sub-station”. Fire fighters rushed to the spot but failed to control the fire, which lasted more than two hours.

While engineers have started working on the fault and are trying to restore power, the workers’ union leadership of the Gazole sub-station alleged that they had alerted the higher authorities about the problem but the engineers had not taken preventive care.

“It would take about two days to repair the fault and restore power supply and we are trying. We are also trying to arrange alternative supply of power at Gazole by evening”, the divisional manager said.

Frequent and protracted power cuts mean while continue unabated in Malda and adjoining districts. According to the divisional manager, Malda district requires more than 90 mega watt power a day but is getting at least 25 mega watt less.

“The cut is to make up shortage of power elsewhere”, the divisional manager said. SNS
