KLO man on fast in jail , demands release

MALDA, Feb. 28: Madhab Mandal alias Malkhan Singh, a Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) activist, who was arrested in February 2006 has started fasting in Malda correctional home since today morning, demanding imm-ediate release from jail, district officials said. The district judges yesterday visited the Malda jail and had a talk with Madhab Mandal. Reportedly, Madhab requested the judges to do something for his release from jail.The Malda jail superintendent said that the fasting programme was organised across the state jail with the decision of Association of Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) and another organisation named Bandi Mukti Samiti (BMS). “Malkhan today informed us this morning that he would continue fasting for an indefinite period,” the jail superintendent said.The jail super has informed the matter to the administration and district judges. The APDR and members of BMS organised the programme in different jails demanding rele-ase of such undertrials.A CPI-M worker was killed in a club in January 2006 and police held KLO men responsible for the murder after investigation. According to police records, Madhab was accused in several cases, including a murder in Pakuahat in Malda. He was engaged in subversive activities and extortion cases in Malda, north and south Dinajpur.He came back to Bamongola, a bordering block and took shelter in Bangladesh after training in the jungles of Bhutan.#
