Tribal woman thought to be witch murdered

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Feb. 3: A 65-year-old tribal woman, Raima Tudu, was brutally murdered by a group of locals who suspected her of being a witch when she was alone in her home at Barobari village under the Raniganj-I gram panchayat in the Gazole police station area last late night. Her fingers were chopped off. Deep wounds were found on her body, including the private parts, police said. Her body has been sent for post mortem. Raima was ostracised by the villagers when some children became sick. During the past three days she was threatened to leave her home. Raima's son went to stay at the house of his in-laws along with his family. Her close relative, Mr Ganesh Soren, an employee of the Malda BSNL has lodged a complaint with the police. “The complaint is not specific. Nobody has been named in the FIR for killing the woman," Mr Sujit Kumar Sarkar, the Malda additional SP said. “We have registered a case for investigation. Raima had one acre of land in her name," said Mr Sarkar. Several people have been killed because they have been suspected as witches in the tribal-dominated Barind belt, comprising Old Malda, Habibpur, Gazole and Bamongola blocks in Malda district. But police investigation has revealed that in many cases close relatives have killed the victims.
