Woman raped , killed

MALDA, Feb. 4: A newly-married woman was raped and killed at Baganpara village in Sahapur gram panchayat near Malda police station last night.One of the accused persons, Babu Sheikh, was beaten to death on the spot, while another, identified as Chhoton Mandal, managed to escape when the locals chased him. Police have started an investigation into the incident and have sent the victim's body for post mortem to find out if the woman had indeed been raped. The Malda additional SP, Mr Sujit Sarkar, said: “Police are trying to figure out the reason behind the murder. Search is on for Chhoton." According to locals, the two youths forcibly entered the victim's house and committed the crime when her husband, Baidyanath Mandal, a rickshaw-puller was not at home. The victim's father-in-law was in Malda at that time. A neighbour witnessed the incident and raised an alarm, following which the locals caught Babu. According to the villagers, Chhoton and Babu were in an inebriated state when they committed the crime and had been watching blue films at Chhoton's residence earlier in the evening. According to the police, Chhoton has criminal records. Tension prevails in the area and police on alert so that the situation does not spin out of control. #
