Two-day folk fest to begin today

MALDA, Feb 5: The West Bengal folk and tribal culture centre and the district information and cultural affairs department would organise a two-day folk festival, Gambhira and Domni Utsav-2008. It would be jointly held on the Manikchak block premise from 6 February.The Manikchak panchayat samiti has planned to use the folk culture festival for spreading awareness through folk songs. A seminar on social guarantee schemes for the labourers in unorganised sector, like bidi workers, rickshaw and van pullers and labourers engaged in construction would be organised.The local team of Domni would stage various programmes for awareness on sanitation, health and literacy in the district. On the second day, the local festival committee led by Manikchak panchayat samiti, would organise a seminar on government programmes like education, health and self-employment in rural areas. Besides this, the committee would use the stage constructed for the festival on 7 February to collect funds for the proposed Gourbango Vishwavidyalaya in Malda and Manikchak College.The state environment minister, Mr Sailen Sarkar, CPIM MLA, Mrs Asima Choudhury, the Malda DM, Mr CR Das and the Malda SP, Mr Satyajit Bandyopadhayay, and principals of other colleges would be present for collecting funds for the proposed university and the college. The resource mobilisation committee has already collected more than Rs 1 core for Gourbango University. The Malda zilla parishad sabhadhipati, Mr Goutam Chakraborty, will inaugurate the festival on 6 February.
