Congress activist beaten to death

MALDA, 5 OCT: A group of people today beat a Congress supporter Mainuddin Sarkar (45) to death at Nijlamari village under Chanchal police station. The victim's nephew Mr Afjal Sheikh, a CPI-M worker, was allegedly involved in the incident. Sarkar succumbed to his injuries at the Chanchal block primary health centre this afternoon. Arriving late, the police had to face angry Congress supporters at Ashapur and had to return without visiting the incident spot. Further police force was sent to the area to stop the hostilities. A Congress leader at Chanchal Mr S Chakraborty described that the CPI-M workers killed Sarkar as he and his brother had disclosed the name of the CPI-M workers who had attacked a Congress party office and set fire to it a few weeks ago. The Congress leader also alleged that today’s incident was a fallout of a clash between the Citu and Congress workers a few weeks ago over the formation of a workers’ union unit. Rejecting the allegation, the CPI-M district secretary Mr Jiban Moitra said the incident resulted from a family feud and there was no political connection to it. ;SNS
