Bangladeshi detained with musk-filled bottles

Statesman News Service

MALDA, 2 OCT.: Acting on a tip-off, immigration officials at Mehadipur border outpost in English Bazaar today intercepted a Bangladeshi who was carrying 20 small bottles of ‘musk’ (the deer-musk) on the way to his country.

The intelligence officials of border security force got information that a group of people was smuggling musk from near the Indian border.

The Bangladeshi, identified as Mr Hasimuddin Mandal, resident of Naogaon in Bangladesh, was handed over to the forest department for necessary action.

When Mr Mandal’s visa and passport were being checked the immigration officials and the BSF found ‘musk’ filled 20 small bottles in a box.

Mr Mandal was produced in Malda court today after the divisional forest officials in Malda interrogated and finally registered a case against him.

The district forest department has decided to send the collected sample of ‘musk’ for laboratory tests to get an authentic report whether it is genuine.

The border security officials suspect that there may be a big racket behind the man for smuggling such item to Bangladesh.

This is first time BSF officials intercepted a person who was carrying such item along India Bangladesh border with valid papers.

Mr. Mandal confessed that he came to India particularly to consult with some doctors in Vellore for the treatment of his son.

“I had bought the items from a seller on footpath paying Rs. 20 per bottle. I had planned to experiment the item for treatment of some particular patients in my country”, Mr. Mandal said.

He claimed himself as quack by profession in Bangladesh. The minimum market rate of musk is nearly $50 per gram in foreign countries.
