MALDA, 4 OCT.: Two days have passed but police are still clueless about the attack on school teachers on Friday, the incident that killed one and injured two others.

Utpal Sarkar (46), an assistant teacher of Raniganj High School in Gazole, was shot dead on Friday night at Chhitka-Mahal on National Highway 34 under Gazole police station when he was returning to Malda town in a car accompanied by Mr Ashok Saha, the headmaster of Chadravati High School in Gazole.

Sarkar, who received injuries on his neck, succumbed yesterday morning when he was on his way to Kolkata.

Another person, Mr Prasanta Haldar who was also injured in the incident, is now convalescing in a Kolkata hospital.

According to the Gajole police officials, Mr Saha, a businessman, was driving his own car and Sarkar and Mr Haldar, a staff of Mr Saha's patrol pump, were accompanying him.

According to police officials, some criminals, who were on a pick-up van, overtook the car on the way and shot the two.

The headmaster was merely hit though. The criminals later fled by a two-wheeler.

Interestingly, the criminals had not taken other valuables kept in the car apart from a sum of Rs 10,000.Mr Saha was interrogated for a long time on Friday night following the incident, which took place around 10 pm on Friday.

The Malda SP Mr Satyajit Bandyopadhyay said that police have not yet arrested anybody.

“We are on the lookout for the criminals and are simultaneously exploring all the other angles possibly involved with the case. It might be a case of robbery, though we are not certain. Mr Saha has failed to enlighten police much on the incident,” he added.
