Horticulture dept campaigns for off-season mango cultivation


MALDA, 16 OCT: The horticulture department in Malda has been campaigning for the cultivation of “off-season mangoes” apart from traditional ones in this district since 6 October.
The horticulture officials have been meeting farmers across the district, encouraging them to cultivate off-season mangoes to get better prices at the local markets between the months of October and December.
According to the mango development officer in Malda Mr SN Khara, some farmers have been interested to create orchards in small form for off season variety of mango experimentally.
According to Mr Khara, farmers may cultivate some variety of mangoes like Baromasia, Dofalla, Vastara, China Vastara, Topala and others in this district.
Farmers of Bandel and Adi-Saptagram in Hooghly have already created many orchards for cultivation of mangoes in off season.
Following the guideline of the state horticulture department, a nursery owner at Raikhandighi in Gazole, who is also a mango grower and National prize winner in mango cultivation, have imported many off season mango samplings for cultivation and started cultivation experimentally. ;SNS
