CPI-ML, Suci demand compensation for land losers

MALDA, 9 OCT: The CPI-ML peasant wing All India Agricultural Labourers’ Association (AIALA) and the Suci have demanded rehabilitation and adequate compensation for those who would lose land to accommodate railway projects in Malda.

While the AIALA leadership has started contacting small and marginal land owners including tribals of Gazole block to mount a movement on the issue, an Suci state committee member Mr Sanjit Biswas said: “We welcome the railway's development projects in Malda but we demand adequate compensation and rehabilitation for the land losers.”

Commenting on the issue, the district Left Front chairman Mr Jiban Moitra said: “Although Miss Mamata Banerjee has created problems on land acquisition issue in general, we welcome the railway projects and land should be acquired for it. We need to talk to the farmers and ensure their demands are met to avoid a controversy.”

It may be noted that the railway has already deposited a sum of Rs 1.72 crore with the Malda land acquisition department and sent a proposal to the state government for acquiring 115 acres of land needed to lay tracks for 12 km at Gazole.

Mr Nabakumar Biswas, AIALA state committee member, said: “We are not against the land acquisition for the development of railway communication in this region. All we want is an adequate package for the land losers.”

The area earmarked to accommodate the railway project has tribal population, particularly at Gazole in Malda district and adjacent areas of South Dinajpur district. They would lose land to the project.

Speaking on the matter, the Malda district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh said: “If we acquire tribal land we would provide similar volume of land to them with government approval.” ;SNS
