Goons ransack property, locals stage protest

MALDA, June 23: A group of 25 criminals allegedly backed by a local promoter belonging to the Congress barged into the house of Mr Swapan Ghosh, ransacked property and then molested his family members in English Bazaar town this morning.Angry residents of ward no. 5 under the leadership of Congress backed Independent councillor and the RSP councillor of the neighbouring ward, blocked roads twice near the English Bazaar police station demanding security of local people and arrest of the promoter and his associates affecting the traffic system on K J Sanyal road.The locals alleged that the criminals attacked the house in connivance with the police.Police came to the spot after half-an- hour despite several calls. The armed goons raided the house and ransacked it for 30 minutes.The police have arrested one Jhantu out of the four named in the FIR including Khudiram Mistri, former district president, Chhatra Parishad, who is now a local promoter.The victim Swapan Ghosh said that he had bought 6 acres of land from one Badri Narayan while Khudiram bought the rest.“Khudiram had been threatening us to vacate the land claiming it his own.He and his associates today raided my house and looted Rs 25,000, gold chain and ear rings from my family members threatening them with fire arms,” Mr Ghosh alleged.Local residents expressed concerns over the rise in crimes in the area after the murder of INTUC district president Biswanath Guho.The police said they were planning stern action against such criminal acts and against the ‘land mafias.’
